3rd Grade Hearing and Vision Screenings
We will be doing 3rd Grade Vision and Hearing Screenings on Wednesday, November 18th, 2009. Please make sure that your children bring their glasses, if they wear them, so that they can be screened appropriately that day. I hope to get any necessary referrals out to you before Thanksgiving break.
Hearing and Vision Screening
Hearing and Vision Screenings are performed on the following students at Hampton Oaks Elementary:

  • All Kindergartners
  • All 3rd Graders
  • All new students to Stafford County (regardless of grade-level)
  • All teacher/parent referrals
  • Special education students as determined by the Child Study Team
If a student is found to have a suspected deficit after a screening, a referral letter is sent home recommending a followup visit with an appropriate specialist (i.e. audiologist for hearing, and optomologist/optometrist for vision). *If no defect is noted, no notice is sent home.*

Parents, if your child has a prescription to wear glasses or contacts, please make sure that they are bringing them to school every day.

Also, if your child needs glasses and you are not able to afford them, you may qualify for assistance through LIONS club. Applications are available from the clinic. Please call or send a note, and I will be happy to send an application home with your student.
5th Grade Scoliosis Screenings
Scoliosis Screenings are usually held in February for all 5th grade students. This is mandated by the Virginia School Health Guidelines. For their comfort, female students are encouraged to wear either a bathing suit or sports bra on the day of the screening. A notice will be sent home before the screening day to let you know when it is scheduled to occur. If any defect is noted, a referral form will be sent home shortly after the screening day to recommend following up with your child's physician. *No notes are sent home for normal screenings*
